Richard Balf

The atmospheric picture on the front cover of Beneath African Skies was taken by my dear friend, Richard Balf.  Richard loved Africa and his stunning pictures taken on his visit to the Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru in Kenya in 2004 capture the mood of this wonderful country so well.

Richard’s love of photography developed over the years and his talent was recognized professionally in his latter years.  He was also well known in the historic market town of Helmsley in North Yorkshire where, from 1990, he successfully managed a substantial portfolio of residential property on behalf of private landlords across the region from the Vale of York to the coast at Whitby.  Richard Balf & Co continues to be managed by his wife, Barbara.  Following a career as a solicitor, she brought her invaluable experience in landlord and tenant law to the practice.

Richard’s love of life and nature is expressed is his photography.  More of his photographs will appear on the weekly blog pages for Beneath African Skies over the coming months.  Tragically, Richard died suddenly at home in Helmsley on Sunday October 24th, 2010, aged 56. I am extremely grateful to Barbara, my best friend, for allowing me to use this amazing picture on the front cover of Beneath African Skies.

It's all but written! However, I might wait until we have been back to Kenya (probably in January next year) before publishing.

Thanks Mike. I'm going to send you a file on all the stuff we found out about Hougham Park, our ancestor's house in Coega Bay, Port Elizabeth.t

I loved this book. It brought home the real atmosphere of Africa and the story was really interesting.
When is the sequel coming out?
